Honors English, 2089H, Fall semester 2013
This was the first English class I took outside of high school, and it was actually a wonderful experience. For the first time since switching from Engineering I was in a class full of kids with all different majors, which was incredibly refreshing. I made on of my new closest friends in that class and greatly improvement my satisfaction in my writing and the ease with which I could produce a paper.
During high school I was not very confident in my writing, but this class really helped improve my writing and boost my confidence. The order of the papers my teacher expected from us, starting with most casual, and ending with the full-blown field research paper helped me ease into writing again. I enjoyed the topics I wrote about, and the research I had to do for each of them, both on myself and the topic I was writing about. The readings we were given were very interesting, educational, entertaining at times, and always related to the topic in class. I have attached for anyone interested in reading them, the first and last papers I wrote for this class to demonstrate the difference between my writing at the beginning of the semester and the end, showing how my work began more casually and progressed to more detailed and supported thesis and thoughts by the conclusion of the course.
By mentally preparing myself that I would need to write many more papers that semester than is ever needed in Engineering, I was able to overcome my dislike and fear of writing papers, which always ended up in procrastination and stress. It worked, and I was able to write all my papers in a timely fashion, while even enjoying it to some extent. Some components of the course were not integrated due to miscommunication between departments, but it was still a great class and I definitely benefited from it greatly.
